In 1959, Edward T. Hall published the book, The Silent Language, in which he was the first to use the phrase,“intercultural communication.”He is considered the founder of the field, as his work has influenced a great deal of academic research in human interaction between cultures, as well as applied intercultural communication training.

Hall began his journey in the field of anthropology while working at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. government. His work with the Hopi and Navajo native-Indians inspired him to study the behaviors and interactions between people of different cultures.

Where as main stream anthropology tends to focus on the economic, government, kinship, and religious systems of a single culture, Hall soon realized that understanding how to communicate effectively with people from different cultures cannot be achieved through the macro-level approach of anthropology.

He began looking for a more practical approach to communication by looking at the micro-level aspects of non-verbal communication, how human beings use space (proxemics), as well as how time sense (chronemics) impacts interaction between people from different cultures.

Research in the field of intercultural communication is still influenced by Hall’s work to this day. He is one of the most-cited intercultural communication authors and three of his books are among the most-cited books in the study of intercultural communication.

The field has grown and developed in academic communities, as well as in business training where there is a strong need for practical approaches to communication across cultures. However, the most interesting fact surrounding his work is that even though Hall contributed a vast amount of research on intercultural communication, he never intended to create a separate field of study.

Intercultural communication grew and developed around the world as a subject in academic institutions, even though Hall always considered himself to be an anthropologist.
